The challenge

Normet, based in Iisalmi, Finland, is a global technology leader in underground mining, tunneling, and civil engineering projects. Operating in over 50 locations across 30 countries, Normet’s advanced equipment is used in hundreds of mines and tunnel worksites worldwide. The company also provides aftermarket services and other solutions, such as construction chemicals and rock reinforcement.

Before partnering with Vaimo, Normet faced a problem with its existing quotation tool: support for the platform was about to end. They needed a replacement quotation tool that would meet their business requirements and be easy to use. That’s when Vaimo stepped in, beginning a successful collaboration with Normet.

The solution: A new quotation tool & Akeneo PIM

Upon reviewing Normet’s current quotation tool, Vaimo found it overly complex. A series of workshops helped the team gather insights for improvement. Since Normet was satisfied with the core functionality of the old tool, Vaimo decided to replicate much of the tool’s features but built it on a faster, more robust platform. Designed for Normet’s global sales team, this tool is for internal use only. While the new solution re-implemented many aspects of the previous tool, the MVP version introduced key optimizations and improvements, particularly in user interface design, making it more modern and user-friendly.

The new tool’s frontend is a custom web application built on a modern tech stack. It leverages technologies like React and Next.js for high performance and flexibility. Vaimo also delivered an adjacent PIM (Product Information Management) solution built on Akeneo Community Edition.

Faced with a tight timeline due to the quickly approaching end of support for Normet’s old tool, Vaimo delivered an enhanced, user-friendly platform that fully met Normet’s business needs. The architecture was designed to be straightforward while guaranteeing performance and scalability.

Akeneo PIM solution

Normet’s previous quotation tool relied on MS SharePoint for product data management through spreadsheets. Vaimo implemented a much more advanced solution with Akeneo’s product associations, significantly improving product data management. Using Vaimo Connectmatch as an integration and intermediate storage solution, Normet can now efficiently manage and update product data. The system also allows for leveraging the PIM solution for other sales channels.

The data migration was a true time and money saver, as we could shut down the old tool quickly after go-live.

Results

As Normet faced the end of support for its old quotation tool, Vaimo developed a faster, enhanced solution that retained the functionality Normet was accustomed to. By combining the Minimal UI React Kit with Next.js, Vaimo created a platform that met all Normet’s needs while offering a more efficient, modern user experience.

The new quotation tool enables Normet to sell upgrades and modifications to their existing machinery more effectively. Additionally, the new Akeneo PIM solution allows Normet to manage and update product data dynamically, with the flexibility to extend the solution to other sales channels in the future.

The end-users have embraced this new quotation tool enthusiastically, finding it very easy to use and highly efficient. In addition, the product management team got a well-structured, dynamic tool for product management that empowers the team to stay organized, adapt swiftly, and scale effortlessly.
